Glossary

U
Ultimate Elongation   This measures the percent stretch of the glove at the point it breaks. Typically a good glove should have a stretch of 600-900% before it breaks.

V
Vinyl   This term is a common abbreviation for PVC or polyvinyl chloride, a synthetic polymer derived from the polymerization of vinyl chloride. PVC is a brittle plastic. To enable it to be molded for glove manufacture, a plasticizer is added to soften the PVC.
Vulcanization   In layman term, it is also called curing. Basically in vulcanization, the latex particles are modified by the added chemicals. In particular, the sulfur atoms are chained with the rubber molecules to form a cross-link that strengthens the physical properties of the rubber. Without vulcanization, rubber will find little practical applications as it will tear and melt easily.

W
Water Leak Test   A test designed to determine the pinhole level of a batch of gloves. The most common method is using 1000ml of clean water, which is poured into a glove sample and observed for a few minutes for any signs of leaks.
Width   This measures the width of the palm at the base of the thumb and index finger to the edge of the palm. The width determines the glove size, from XS to XL.
